Although no one wants to end up in an Emergency Room, if you find yourself here, you’ll discover it’s staffed by a team of professionals who love their work. Three board-certified physicians, a physician’s assistant, and an ARNP share the shifts to ensure there’s care for any emergency situation, 24-hours a day.

    Angela Kerchner, MD

    Angela Kerchner, M.D.
Dr. Angie Kerchner is the Emergency medical director who assembled the current team. “I’ve worked in a lot of rural hospitals in Iowa,” said Dr. Kerchner. “Most of them hire outside contractors to work in emergency rooms in 24-hour shifts. The hospitals don’t know the physicians well, and the doctors don’t get to know the community. Dr. Kerchner is board certified in family medicine, but has always worked in the ER.“I fell in love with this community and the hospital when I started in 2016. I was looking for a permanent position, and the hospital had a need that I could fill,” recalls Dr. Kerchner. She became the medical director during the summer of 2018 and started building the team. She likes the flexibility in scheduling that ER work allows. She, her husband, and her three teenagers live nearby in Lenox, IA.

    Haroon Ferhut, MD

    Haroon Ferhut, M.D.
An RCH emergency physician since October 2018, Dr. Haroon Ferhut never guessed that he’d be working in a small town in Iowa. He grew up in Virginia and California, attended medical school on an island in the Caribbean, and completed his residency rotations all over the United States. He worked in cities like Decatur, GA, Hollywood, FL, Brooklyn and Chicago before he landed in Kansas City for his final rotation. “I got used to packing and traveling!” he admits. He currently lives in Kansas City and commutes to Mount Ayr for his shifts in the ER. Dr. Ferhut’s favorite things about Ringgold County Hospital are the patients and the staff. “Every time I step in the door, I have a smile on my face,” he said. “I get along with everyone and I have a good rapport with my patients. I want to continue to build those relationships.”

    Patricia Fasbender, DO

    Patricia Fasbender, D.O.
A mother of three adult children, being a doctor is a second career for Dr. Fasbender. “I followed in my mom’s footsteps and was a teacher for 12 years,” she said. She attended medical school and completed her residency in Des Moines. “I’ve been a doctor for 13 years now!” She relocated to Mt. Ayr and feels like a more permanent part of the community. “I grew up on a dairy farm in a rural community. This is familiar to me.” Dr. Fasbender loves being a doctor. “I believe we are all put here to do good work. This is a way I choose to do good.” Her background in science and as a teacher still come into play daily. “As a scientist, I have to figure out what’s wrong with each patient. After that, most of what I do is teach patients how to care for themselves to get better.” Like her teammates, Dr. Fasbender has been very impressed with the hospital staff. “The level of cooperation is incredible. All the doctors are warm and welcoming.” Dr. Fasbender also assists in the Mt. Ayr Medical Clinic, filling in for other providers who are out on leave, or during peak time periods.

    Ron Schafer, PA-C

    Ron Schafer, D.O.
Ron joined Ringgold County Hospital in 1990, working as an EMT while he continued his education. He became a paramedic in 1993 and went on to further his education. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Des Moines University Osteopathic Medicine in 2000 and began serving as a physician assistant with both the hospital and the Mt. Ayr Medical Clinic. Ron focuses primarily on family medicine but also enjoys providing emergency room coverage. Ron also received certification in wound care and provides care for chronic, difficult-to-treat wounds. Denise Coleman, ARNP

    Denise Coleman, ARNP
Denise attended Southwestern Community College in Creston and earned her associate degree becoming a Registered Nurse as part of a career change. She had done her clinical training at Ringgold County Hospital and when she graduated, she was offered a job immediately. “I’ve done a lot of work in the Emergency Room,” she said. “ER is my baby. I worked there and did bedside nursing with medical-surgical patients for two years.” At that point, she was approached by the hospital’s leadership to help build its electronic medical records system. “I did that for about a year and enjoyed it. I’m a jack of all trades,” said Denise. In the meantime, she was promoted to be the manager of ER and Med-Surg.

Not satisfied with the status quo, Denise went back to school in 2015 to earn her bachelor’s and then her master’s degrees. By 2019 she completed all the work necessary to become a Nurse Practitioner. “I can diagnose, treat, prescribe, and provide medical advice,” she explained. Ringgold County Hospital is her home away from home. “The hospital has been my employer for 11 years. I love the variety of my job. I’m a utility player. Some days I’m in the ER, I do some hospital rounds, and I care for sick patients in the Mt. Ayr Medical Clinic. That allows the clinic staff to keep appointments available.” Caring for patients who are part of a rural population is particularly rewarding for Denise. “I’m dedicated to providing the best care – no matter where you live. Our patients become our family.

He now practices with the same doctors that he interned with. Like many physicians who choose to practice their specialties in rural areas, Dr. Weis enjoys the challenges that come with working with a lot of different patients. “In Mt. Ayr, I work a lot with systemic issues like diabetes and ocular diseases like macular degeneration and glaucoma. I enjoy seeing patients of all ages, it makes health care so interesting” says Dr. Weis

Joel Weis, O.D. moved his Mt. Ayr Family Vision Center office to the Visiting Physician’s Clinic within Ringgold County Hospital in 2019. One of the best aspects of being located within the hospital is collaboration, says Dr. Weis. “I had a stand-alone clinic in Mt. Ayr for six years.
