What Is Optometry?
Your eyes help you appropriately perceive and operate within the world around you. Not being able to see clearly can disrupt nearly all areas of your life, impacting everyday tasks, such as driving, working, reading, cooking, and more.
Optometry plays an important role in your vision care. Optometrists are healthcare professionals you rely on to monitor the changing condition of your eyes throughout your life. They are the eye care specialists who diagnose and treat a wide variety of vision problems and eye diseases.
Optometry Services
An optometrist is the eye care professional who tests your vision and orders corrective lenses for many common refractory issues, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Your optometrist provides a variety of vision care services, including:
- Eye exams
- Vision tests
- Prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses
- Eye disease monitoring, especially for patients with diabetes
- Low vision aids and education
Eye Conditions Treated
Optometrists can identify the earliest signs of vision problems and eye diseases – as well as offering appropriate treatments. Conditions they treat include:
- Astigmatism
- Cataracts
- Cross-eye (strabismus)
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Double vision
- Dry eye syndrome
- Farsightedness (hyperopia)
- Glaucoma
- Macular degeneration
- Nearsightedness (myopia)
- Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
Signs You May Need to See an Eye Care Provider
Regular checkups with an optometrist is critical to maintaining good vision and eye health. That’s because many eye disorders and diseases often have no symptoms – until your vision is already irreversibly damaged. So, even if your vision or eyes seem fine, it’s important to visit an eye care provider at least once a year.
Of course, you shouldn’t wait to see an eye doctor if you’re experiencing symptoms with your vision or eyes. Symptoms that indicate you should visit an eye care specialist right away include:
- Any changes in your vision
- Difficulty seeing clearly
- Blurry vision
- Double vision
- Headaches
- Sensitivity to light
- Inflammation or infection in or around the eye
- Dry eyes
- Trouble seeing at night
- Vision loss
